Page of Swords

Here is the card of the novice. Yes, sometimes the Page of Swords can symbolize a text message. Yes, it can also talk about you and someone else not being on the same page, but when I pull it, it talks about being the newbie.

In many decks, the imagery of the card is of this little boy trying to clumsily wield a gigantic sword. He hasn't yet mastered it. We all start new things and feel awkward. Sometimes before we do this, we have a lot of anxiety. The way to get rid of that anxiety is to be comfortable being vulnerable.

If you are too busy worrying about messing things up, you won't have the clarity to learn what you need to. So why not just embrace the process? Know that while you are not a master now, that you are on your way to becoming one and will be able to relax and be at ease and knowledgeable in the future.

Vulnerability is a beautiful thing if we can feel comfortable with it. Not letting pride get in the way of trying new things is also beautiful. Yes, we can mess up, but that's how we learn. And no, we don't have to know everything now.

When I was a kid, up straight through my 20s, I always wanted to be the best at something right away. What that got me was a lot of broken bones, torn ligaments, and anything else that could be filed under too much too soon.

The joy lies in the process.

As an adult in my 30s, I picked up a ukulele for the first time last year. And, you know what? I'm terrible at it, but the joy of learning something new has been unparalleled. The joy of seeing myself get better with practice, rather than feel daunted about not being a genius at it, helped immensely.

So whether it's a new job, a new position, a class, dating, whatever, know that you have the potential to master something if you have the courage to step up to the plate and try, and keep trying. Give yourself a break, and know that down the line you will have the hang of it.
