The Story About Hades
In Mythic Tarot, and Greek Mythology, you meet Hades (the god of the underworld). Hades had three sisters, Demeter, Hestia, and Hera, and two brothers, Poseidon and Zeus. Hades was the son of Chronos, and his mother was Rhea.
In legend, it was said that Chronos consumed each of his children, right after they were born, except for Zeus. Rhea, Zeus’s mother saved him, when she took a rock and wrapped it up in a blanket as her newborn, to trick Chronos! Rhea took Zeus and raised him in safety, away from Chronos. But when Zeus grew up, he caught up with Chronos and made him regurgitate all Rhea’s children, and Hades was one of them.
After the battle of the Titans, and overthrowing his father, Cronos (a Titan) and the older generation of gods, Zeus shared the powers of the world with his brothers, and it was said that they drew lots for their powers and realms. Zeus drew the realm of the sky, Poseidon drew the realm of the sea, and Hades drew the realm of the underworld.
Although Hades drew a lesser power and realm than Zeus, his power was as strong as Zeus’s! He was in charge of managing the underworld, and when a soul entered Hades domain, no one could rescue that soul, except for Zeus, but only in certain cases, and it was said that being rescued from the underworld was very rare.
The Sun rises in the distance bringing a new day... The River Styx is shown in this card and it represents a sacred boundary! The river separates the living from the dead! There are three naked maidens, or should I say souls begging Hades for more time on Earth!
The first maiden offers Hades a blooming white poplar flower (the maiden asks for more time on Earth because white poplar flowers represent life, and black poplar flowers represent funerals and death), the second maiden offers Hades a golden crown (assuring Hades that he could be the ruler of her life if he gives her more time on Earth), and the third maiden offers Hades a pile of coins (all the coins that she will earn if he gives her more time on Earth).
Have you ever wondered why your path suddenly ended, and you never saw it coming? Remember the day that you woke up afresh, and then poof; you felt as if you got run over by the bus, and everything changed, in a moment’s notice!
As an example: the ending of a long term relationship, marriage partnership, business partnership, or the ending of your job... Endings are very difficult to deal with because you have to let go of the path that you know so very well! You are forced to let it go, and you are forced to let go of your dreams, forcing you out of your comfort zone! The hard part is that you have to let go and experience the painful ending first and then accept the ending before you will see the beauty of the new path that is waiting for you!

My Interpretation Of Death
The Death card represents that you are ready to be reborn, and start anew. This card indicates a transition. You have been brought down to your lowest point but only so that you can then soar to new, unprecedented heights.
The Death card’s frightful appearance is offset by the sun rising in the background, heralding a new day. The naked maidens are symbolic of the death of a situation, and the advent of a new transformation.
This card of rebirth recalls the story of the Phoenix who burned to death and was reborn. The Phoenix is a mythical bird that lives for 500 years, then builds its own funeral pyre, and is consumed by the flames.
The Phoenix rises anew from the ashes, however, thus symbolizing the rising and setting of the sun, immortality, resurrection, and life after death. The tale of the Phoenix sums up this card rather nicely.
When this card shows up in a reading, it means that a monumental change approaches. Keep in mind that where there is an ending, there is also a beginning. You can always count on change, no matter how long you’ve been working at your job, how long you’ve been married, or how long you’ve lived in one location – the facts and the statistics show that everything changes.
Sometimes this card relates to events beyond your control and simply steers you in a different direction. The Death card does not predict an actual death, but rather the ending of something, whether it be a relationship, a situation, or a career change. It is a difficult change, but you must accept the reality of endings and take solace in the inevitable rebirth that follows.

The Reverse Meaning Of Death
The reverse meaning of the Death card is depression that stems from the refusal to accept change. There is an ending to a situation that you refuse to accept.

Life Lessons: Always remember, the Major Arcana represents major life lessons, so if the Death card comes out in the outcome of the reading, you are being told to let go of a past situation because it is over. The Death card represents the door of the past is closing, bringing dramatic changes, an ending, but also a new beginning!
When the Death card comes out in the outcome, it usually signifies that something was not right for you, and you have to embrace the change because a new door is opening for you. The Death card brings transformation and pushes you in a new direction.
The Death card represents death, in the sense not of the end of a physical life but of the end of a cycle. The appearance of the Death card means the end of an outdated way of thinking or of a lifestyle that has been outgrown.
I hope that you have enjoyed the Death card, and I also hope that you are not experiencing a painful ending. I know transformation is not easy to accept, especially when it is suddenly forced on you! Please let me know if you weathered any unexpected changes!
