Meditation ~ Heal Heartbreak

By Caroline :: :: 10 comments

Heartbreak is one of the most painful experiences in life and it can take some time to heal the grief. Studies show that we experience emotional pain as physical pain, so your body hurts too. You will know already this if your heart has ever been broken.

The good news is there are many ways to heal heartbreak. Mindfulness meditation is one of the best ways to cope with the painful feelings that well up in the early days when just one more moment can feel like too much.

Mindfulness meditation helps you to be with your feelings. With heartbreak the only way out is through: you have to feel your emotional pain to heal it.

It’s scary to feel sometimes but nothing bad will actually happen. Instead the feelings will subside after you allow some airtime and let yourself feel.

And, meditation is good for you. Recent research has proved that just 11 hours of meditation can heal your brain and improve your mood by creating more nerve fibres, connections and balancing your body chemistry.

Thich Nhat Hanh teaches that you simply breathe and observe your feelings. Here is an idea of what might come up. Feel it, let it out, keep going until it’s done... Then notice you are still here, still a living, breathing, beautiful miracle. You will survive this.

And if you need to talk, I’m here.

Love, Caroline

Feeling pain in my heart, I breathe in.
Feeling my heart breaking, I breathe out.

Feeling hurt, I breathe in.
Feeling no one loves me, I breathe out.

Feeling frustration and anger, I breathe in.
Feeling I want to change him/her, I breathe out.

Feeling I am not good enough, I breathe in.
Feeling fear, I breathe out.

Feeling tears streaming down my face, I breathe in.
Feeling shattered into tiny pieces, I breathe out.

Feeling like I can’t breathe, I breathe in.
Feeling lost and alone, I breathe out.

Feeling like I will never survive this, I breathe in.
Feeling like I will never be okay again, I breathe out.

Noticing that I am still here, I breathe in.
Noticing that I am still alive, I breathe out.

Noticing that I am OK, I breathe in.
Noticing that I am OK, I breathe out.

Thank you for this meditation. My heart is broken and I’m really struggling and it has affected me in so many ways, my confidence, my feelings of self worth, my ability to be interested in and excited about things. I never thought I would react this way. I’ve always been a very optimistic person open to whatever life throws my way. And don’t get the wrong picture, I have not crumpled into a ball because my love treated me badly. He loves me dearly but it was just one of those things where circumstances got in the way. The thing I’m struggling most with is that if two people love each other so much and have never experienced anything like it before then doesn’t that mean they are meant to be together? Unfortunately sometimes life says ‘no’. Also the problem is that I don’t cry easily, all the pain just stays inside. Doing your meditation I cried for the first time in a while. The first step to healing? Pray for me, the road will be long but I know I’ll get there in the end.

It’s true that heartbreak can bring so much grief. You do have to find the strength and courage to love again. Meditation can help a lot, along with spiritual guidance such as an advisor as yourself. Love this meditation exercise! Great post!

I just suffered a heartbreaking loss... My wish is to have a healthy baby with my husband Nathan. We never had a wedding so we would love to be able to afford a wonderful celebration with family and friends renewing our vows along with the miracle of new life with our healthy baby one day. Sincerely, Tina
