the woman in question, again, was not asking my advice as far as I understand on the medical proceedure
Go back and read what I wrote to you about offering a medical opinion…you are saying the there may be a *complication*

That IS a medical opinion

You said that your were seeing a *complication*

Is that *complication* that you see in the cards a result of the surgical procedure or something else? Nathan wrote in a prior post::- She has never asked nor have I given her any medical options or insights

her question only pertains to whether or not the tower card pertains to her husbands surgery

and perhaps whether or not it will be successful
If she asked you to tell her if the surgical procedure would be "successful" she is asking for "medical insight"

She is asking you to interpret the cards and give an opinion on the outcome of a surgical prodedure

can:- the tarot address those types of questions? SHOULD the tarotist address those types of questions? they have already decided what they are going to do

she only wanted to know if the tower card was related to her husbands heart surgery

not about what proceedure to use or not use

she just told me what the proceedure was
You are, or so I understood you to say, interpreting the cards as a *complication* based on the surgical procedure

The medical opinion you previously discussed in this thread is NOT about the procedure, but is a result of the procedure

YOU had contemplated how you were going to tell your querant about a *complication* following a medical procedure: that is a medical opinion, that there might be a complication as a result of a medical procedure

…I think it would be fair, in comparing it to saying I say I think because the skies are blue that the day will be nice, although I am not a meteorologist

I just interpret the blue sky as being a nice day, and this is what I see

so if someone e-mailed me asking what the weather was like right now, I'd look out the window and say "well, the sky is blue and the weather is warm, so to me is a nice day"

this might be another poor example, but I'm trying to explain :)
No it is not the same

To say the sky is blue is an observation and an observation is much different than interpreting the cards, especially interpreting the cards and seeing a medical complication

…If that IS something that is considered a thrid party reading, then I'd have to wonder why such an ethic would be out there, since there are many who do, do readings via e-mail

but again, I haven't looked into such things, but hope to make the time to do so, soon
No

The third party in this situation of your querant’s husband

In the final analysis you were reading the cards about his surgery and the outcome, that ‘*complication* you saw

The reading had gone from being about the querant to being about a third party, her husband

The reader and the querant are the first and second parties

My personal code of tarot ethics says, “I read only for the person requesting services

I do not read for third parties

" I questioned whether or not I was reading to much into the cards (hence my post again)
It is my opinion that that is exactly what you were doing, reading into the cards rather than reading the cards and in doing so you were offering a medical opinion

And that medical opinion is that the third party in this reading, the husband, would have a *complication*

We each approach the tarot in our own way

You do not see an ethical issue in telling your client that you interpret the cards as saying her husband may have a *complication*

I do see ethical issues

The first is reading for a third party (the husband) the second is reading on a medical issue for that third party

You do not have to agree with my boundaries, nor does anyone else

I have done my homework, I know what the local and state laws are regarding tarot readings and about counseling without a license, and what constitutes practicing medicine without a license

I am very careful to operate within the law

At least in my state if I was to tell a querant, using the tarot cards, that I thought there might be a complication following a surgical procedure I would be guilty of offering advise that only a licensed health care professional can legally offer

That is a wholly serious offense

Thus, my ethics include the statement, “I direct my querants to appropriate professionals if their questions are outside my realm of expertise

I do not use the tarot to give legal, investment, medical or psychological advice.” While your querant may not have been seeking medical advice from you with her question regarding the Tower and her husband’s pending surgery, when you laid the cards and read them as being about her husband and about the aftermath of his surgery you were addressing a question that unless you are a health card professional is outside your expertise

We have now both expressed our opinions on the subject
