Although the metal that both Coins and Swords are forged from is tempered in Fire, it comes from the Earth, it is in fact Earth: without Air the metal could not be tempered and Water is certainly part of the process of temperingl The same can be said of the metal, the wood, or the clay that is used to craft Chalices/Cups all come from the Earth, and at least two (metal and clay) require Fire and Air to reach their final form; trees need Water and Earth to grow, clay needs Water to be shaped

Elemental associations are like much of tarot, dependent on a particular school of philosophical thought

The important point is to ask why there are four suits, and just four suits in tarot? It's in the cards!
