Tarot by HH

Originally by anjo:- tarot deck: a deck with cards that contains symbols
Okay, I have the Symbolon* cards they certainly contain symbols, but they are NOT tarot

I have Susan Seddon Boulet's Animal Spirits Cards** and Goddess Cards*** they also contain symbols, they are not tarot

I also have several sets of antique playing cards that contain symbols, but none of them are tarot

I also have oracular cards with symbols, but they are not tarot either

Or is any deck of cards regardless of sequencing and componet parts "tarot"? Again my definition of a tarot deck is that is has reconizable trumps and a Fool card, and suited (such as Batons/Wands Coins/Penatacles Chalices/Cups Epees/Swords) cards and within those suits are number cards and COURT CARDS

WolfChild said:- It seems to me that what HH is saying is that you cannot really say you are "reading the tarot" if you do not include all the cards in the tarot deck
At this point all I am trying to do is come to some workable definition of what composes tarot and a tarot deck

You may be giving a reading, and that reading may help you or your client, but you are not actually "reading the tarot" without all the cards

It would be like saying you were "playing chess" if you removed the pawns or the bishops or any other piece before you started

You would not technically be playing chess, then, by definition
Good analogy

On the other hand, I have heard of people doing a reading using only the major arcana

This, then, could not be called "reading the tarot" either, right?
That would be a Majors only or a Trumps + Fool reading

I uses several spreads that divides that deck into its various components, each of those spreads is powerful and illuminating

I am not saying that readings with only certain parts of the deck are not empowering

I am at this poing only trying to come to an agreeable defintion of what IS a tarot deck

Certainly the TAROT is more potent than its components, but it is the combination of components, at least in my tarot system that make it so powerful

Returning to the tool analogy of a previous conversation

I was digging a hole earlier today to plant an apple tree

I hit a very large stone with the scoop and it broke away from the handle

.it what I am left with still a shovel or is it now a relatively useless scoop and a splintered ended handle? To terminology!
