All right! Here we go then, but be warned that this is going to be a [b]very[/b] long post
The easier part of this is how to reckon the quintessence (QE) of a reading
The rules go like this: 1
) All the trumps count what they show: The Fool counts 0, The Magician counts 1, The High Priestess counts 2,
The World counts 21
[b]BE CAREFUL[/b], however: "Strengh/Lust" always counts 11 and "Justice/Adjustment" always counts 8! 2
) All the Aces count 1
3
) All numbered minor arcana count what they show
4
) All court cards count zero
In a first step, the sum of all the cards is reckoned
If this sum is greater than 22, you must calculate the sum of the digits of the first sum you reckoned
Sample: If your first sum is 83, you need to calculate "8+3", which results to 11
Thus, the quintessence of your reading is "Strength/Lust"
Now a greater example: Suppose you have a reading of 7 cards: Position 1: Trump XIV --> 14 Position 2: Trump II --> 2 Position 3: Trump XIII --> 13 Position 4: 6 Swords --> 6 Position 5: 4 Wands --> 4 Position 6: Knight of Pentacles --> 0 Position 7: Ace of Wands --> 1 QE: Trump IV (14+2+13+6+4+0+1 = 40 ==> 4+0 = 4 ) And what happens if your QE results exactly to 22? In this event the QE of your reading is The Fool
And now for the difficult part: What does the QE tell us? Where is the beef? There were great discussions about this issue in the German Tarot forums I attended
I will try to sum it all up: 1
) The QE is an important hint about the attitude of the asking person towards her question
For example: What would you make of Trump XV (The Devil) as the QE if the question goes like this: "My colleague attracts me quite well
Is it advisable for me to turn this loose contact into love?" Do you think she is as cool as her words might make you think? I would have my doubts

) The QE works like the background music of a movie scene
Whatever an actor may do (whatever a card may tell), everything she's doing she's doing sadly or merrily or frightened, just as the background music (the QE) lets us know

) According to the question of the reading, the QE can act like the focus where all threads of the reading meet
