.Happy may have a suggestion about a book) I started off with Joanna Martine Woolfolk's The Only Astrology Book You'll Ever Need:-
It's a bit more than "basic," however
I was ready to get heavily into astrology from the get go, so it was perfect for me
I also enjoyed reading The Complete Idiot's Guide to Astrology:- , but again it has a lot of information in it
Tell you what -- check around the web
Put "basic astrology" in your search engine
There are folks who have done a great job of touching on the basics
